“For him that stealeth, or borroweth and returneth not, this book from its owner, let it change into a serpent in his hand and rend him. Let him be struck with palsy, and all his members blasted. Let him languish in pain crying aloud for mercy, and let there be no surcease to his agony till he sing in dissolution. Let bookworms gnaw his entrails in token of the Worm that dieth not, and when at last he goeth to his final punishment, let the flames of Hell consume him forever.”
Ranger's Apprentice - Book 6: The Siege of Macindaw
The kingdom is in danger. Renegade knight Sir Keren has succeeded in overtaking Castle Macindaw and now is conspiring with the Scotti. The fate of Araluen rests in the hands of two young adventurers: the Ranger Will and his warrior friend, Horace.
Yet for Will, the stakes are even higher. For inside Castle Macindaw, held hostage is someone he loves.
For this one-time apprentice, the time to grow up is now.
Language
'Damn' is used 10 times. 'Hell' appears 7 times. 'Devil' gets 5 uses. The Lord's name is misused 8 times, during this book, I did not differentiate between the capitalized uses and the un-capitalized, but it should be noted that now all uses were capitalized.
Violence
This is a siege, so people get killed, but Flanagan pulls it off (as usual) beautifully. He manages to make it real, but not overly gory, yet not watered down.
Other Negative Elements
Skandians swear by a god called "Gorlog" and Malcolm uses his props and sound effects in combination with a Scotti myth involving a demon to get information from MacHaddish. Keren uses a form of hypnotism on Alyss to extract information.
This wasn't specifically my favorite book, but it was still good. I give it a PG for violence, language and some *mild* dark elements.
